Purchases

Eco Eyewear optical frames and clip-ons are sold exclusively through carefully selected authorised opticians and retailers worldwide. This is intentional: optical frames require the right fit, comfort, and prescription – something best handled by certified opticians.

Sunglasses can be purchased directly at eco-eyewear.com with worldwide shipping. Use the Store Finder on the website to locate your nearest retailer.

Sustainability is about more than material. For a frame to be worn for as long as possible, the fit, comfort, style, and prescription type needs to be just right for you. That's why all of our glasses and clip-ons only can be purchased exclusively from our carefully selected and experienced retailers. Find store here

Product

Size can be personal, and we always recommend going after what feels most comfortable to you. If you still need some general guidelines, check out our guide below:

The size we list is the frame’s lens diameter (in mm): the width of one lens at its widest point.

General Size Guide

  • Narrow → 40-48 mm
  • Average → 49-54 mm
  • Wide → 55-58 mm
  • Oversized → > 58 mm

If your sunglasses have polarized lenses, this is always specified in the description on the product page.

Yes. All Eco Eyewear optical frames are designed to be fitted with prescription lenses by your local optician. Because fit and prescription accuracy are essential to long-term comfort and wear, optical frames are sold exclusively through authorised retailers with trained staff. This also aligns with Eco Eyewear's sustainability philosophy – a frame that fits perfectly is a frame worn for years, reducing waste.

Sustainability

Carbon negative means we remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than it generates. Unlike carbon neutral – where emissions are offset on a 1:1 basis – Eco Eyewear goes further: through the One Frame, One Tree program, one tree is planted for every frame sold. To date, over 4.2 million trees have been planted, offsetting more than 233 million kilograms of CO2. This net-positive impact is what makes Eco Eyewear carbon negative rather than merely carbon neutral.

One Frame, One Tree is Eco
Eyewear's core climate initiative. For every frame sold anywhere in the world,
one tree is planted in partnership with the NGO Trees for the Future. Trees are
planted in regions where forest cover is critically low, delivering both
climate and community benefits locally. Since the program launched, more than
4.2 million trees have been planted globally.

Yes. Eco Eyewear has received
multiple independent awards and certifications, including the Certified
Sustainable Eyewear Award (CSE) 2023 for Best Sustainable Case in Europe, the
EyeVote Readers' Choice Award 2024 for Best Brand in Sustainability, the iF
Gold Award 2020 for the Recycled Metal Collection, and the German Design Award
Special 2021 for Excellent Product Design. The brand was founded in 2009 and
was the world's first dedicated sustainable eyewear brand.

Eco Eyewear operates on a
360-degree sustainability model that covers the entire product lifecycle.
Frames are made exclusively from sustainable materials: biobased, recycled
metal, recycled aluminium, and bio acetate. Cases and cleaning cloths are made from
recycled PET. The transport bag is 100% biodegradable cornstarch – the first of
its kind in the eyewear industry. Demo lenses are made from 99% recycled
plastic. Display stands are made from FSC-certified bamboo or recycled paper.
Beyond One Frame, One Tree, the brand also partners with NGO Waste Free Oceans
through its Wave of Change program to address ocean plastic.

Materials

Eco Eyewear offers four primary
sustainable materials:

  • Biobased (from castor oil, lightweight and renewable, used in the Biobased, Retrospect, and Eco Active collections).
  • Bio Acetate (from cotton and wood pulp, phthalate-free and biodegradable).
  • Recycled Metal (infinitely recyclable without quality loss, winner of
    iF Gold Award 2020).
  • Recycled Aluminium (requires 95% less energy to produce than primary aluminium).

The right choice depends on aesthetics, weight preference, and which environmental property you prioritize.

Biobased material used in Eco Eyewear frames is derived from castor oil, extracted from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis). The oil is processed into pellets that form the core of biobased frames. Unlike petroleum-based plastic, the raw material is renewable and has a significantly lower carbon footprint. The material is lightweight, durable, and offers the same comfort and aesthetics as conventional acetate without relying on fossil fuels.

Bio acetate is made from
natural raw materials – cotton and wood pulp – instead of petrochemical
compounds. The result is a material with the same look, feel, and flexibility
as traditional acetate, but it is phthalate-free and biodegradable. Eco Eyewear's
bio acetate frames are paired with magnetic sun clip-ons on all optical
models.

Using recycled metal eliminates the need for new raw material extraction, dramatically reducing energy consumption and mining-related emissions. The material can be recycled repeatedly without losing strength or properties, making it a truly circular material. Eco Eyewear's Recycled Metal collection won the iF Gold Award 2020 and the German Design Award Special 2021, and each optical style includes a matching magnetic biobased sun clip-on.

Producing aluminium from recycled material requires only about 5% of the energy needed to produce primary aluminium, making it one of the most energy-efficient material choices available. Eco Eyewear uses recycled aluminium to create lightweight, high-quality frames with a satin finish and sculpted silhouette. Every frame includes a magnetic sun clip-on made from biobased material, allowing a seamless switch between optical and sun use without sacrificing UV protection or style.
